ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that developed countries should fulfill their commitments to address the impacts of climate change.
UN Resident Coordinator in Pakistan Muhammad Yahya called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in which the Prime Minister appreciated the ongoing work of the UN Country Team in Pakistan and stressed the need to further strengthen cooperation with the UN in the areas of sustainable development and climate change.
The Prime Minister appreciated the role of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in mobilizing global support for Pakistan during the 2022 floods.
He reiterated Pakistan’s strong political commitment to advance the cause of addressing climate change in close cooperation and partnership with the international community and the UN.
The Prime Minister emphasized that climate financing is a key component to address the impacts of climate change and expressed the hope that developed countries will fulfill their commitments in this regard. He said that Pakistan will continue to work with the United Nations on important issues in the areas of climate change, including the implementation of various projects.
Shahbaz Sharif also stressed the need to bridge the financing gap to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as to increase the voice and representation of developing countries in international financial institutions through reforms in the global financial architecture.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Syed Tariq Fatemi, Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Climate Change Romina Khurshid Alam and senior government officials were also present on the occasion.
