ISLAMABAD – The price of electricity is likely to be increased from anywhere between Rs 1.5 to Rs 2 per unit, which will put an additional burden of more than Rupees 162 billion on the people.

According to details, the federal government is mulling over increasing the price of electricity which will put extra burden on the public already trapped in inflation and unemployment due to coronavirus epidemic.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) will decide on this important issue on June 3, next month after a hearing. Power companies have filed applications for quarterly adjustments. Of these adjustments, more than Rupees 73 billion has been requested for October-December 2019 and more than Rs 89 billion for January-March 2020, more than Rs 16 billion for ISCO, Rs 28 billion for LESCO and Rs 13 billion for GEPCO.

Adjustments of Rs 23 billion of FESCO and MEPCO and more than Rs 29 billion of PESCO have been sought.

TESCO has requested for recovery of more than Rs 880 million. In case of approval, the price of electricity is likely to increase by more than Rs 1.5.
