ISLAMABAD: Sardar Mehtab Abbasi Monday resigned as Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in a bid to make his return to parliamentary politics.

Abbasi presented his resignation to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.  Sources said the prime minister has approved the resignation and forwarded it to the president.

The names of Pir Sabir Shah, Iqbal Zafar Jaghra and Senator Salahuddin Tirmiazi are under consideration for the slot of KP Governor.

Abbasi is politically affiliated with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and hails from Abbotabad. Sardar Mehtab took the office of KP Governor on April 15, 2014.

In the past, he served as the Chief Minister of NWFP province, later named as KP, from 1997 to 1999 and as Railways Minister in 2008.

He was nominated as Senator by PML-N in 2003 for five years. He won the National Assembly seat in 2008 General Elections on the ticket of PML-N.  NNI
