Despite the biometric verification of SIM’s cell phone scammers continue to deprive unsuspecting citizens by using the name of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). Scammers contact people through text message asking them to pay a certain processing fee, usually ranging between Rupees 3000 and 5000 through easy paisa and promise loan amounts of up to 30,000. This problem has persisted for a long time resulted in meetings of BISP officials with federal agencies and telecom companies in the past. It was hoped that with the biometric verification of SIM’s the scam would cease but it has picked pace in recent weeks
A detailed analysis of the numbers used by scammers has shown that majority of the text messages are sent by scammers using Telenor’s network. The code 0340 seems to be particularly popular with as many as 70% of the scam texts originating from this code. Citizens have asked the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), BISP officials and relevant authorities to take stern action against scammers using text messages to deprive people of their hard earned cash.
