There is no denying from the fact that for successful bilateral relations a country requires a full time foreign minister. All the developed countries have advocated this idea. Pakistan that has been involved in the internal politics has for sure not understood the significance of having a full time foreign minister. Sartaj Aziz, national security advisor was providing aide to the prime minster as the special advisor on foreign affairs. Such ad hoc appointments are not enough to move with the international community. International diplomatic network requires the kind of coordination between the foreign ministers of the countries that can’t be executed with such a void. This void not only affects the bilateral relations but also proves to be an obstacle for the sovereignty of the country. When we do not have a full time foreign minter we witness the lacking in the communication process. This lacking not only ignores the bureaucratic machinery of the country but also exclude the political leadership in the decision making on issues of considerable importance. No one was ever able to comprehend that what was it that kept Mr Sharif from elevating Mr Aziz to parliament and making him a full time cabinet member. July 28 Verdict has done good wonders especially when it comes to this vacant position. Public as well as opposition remained quite skeptical about his act. The federal cabinet of newly elected Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi with 28 federal and 18 state ministers has taken oath. The new cabinet which is more or less the same old one has seen a shift of Mr Khawajah Asif as the foreign minister. When the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party came to power Asif had the dual charge of the defence ministry and the water and power ministry. The country remained without a foreign minister after 2013 when the PML-N came into power. People have mixed opinions on this appointment. Few are taking this charge as another discriminatory act by the PML-N top leadership. Some consider it to be a new joke with the public while the rest speculate some improvements in the previously sham and undone foreign policies. The appointment of the foreign minister is definitely a step ahead and we need not to speculate the consequences as they’ll soon be apparent.
