ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)has restarted investigation from key personalities to complete probe into allegations of money distribution scam in Ashar Khan case. The report would be sent to interior minister in next two weeks
According to sources the FIA has formed a new team to complete probe into allegations that the ISI (Inter Services Intelligence) distributed millions of rupees among politicians to rig the general elections in 1990.
The FIA Director General Akbar Khan Hoti has recently formed a new joint investigation team (JIT) under the supervision of FIA Additional Director General Khalid Qureshi while FIA Punjab Director Dr Usman Anwer and some other senior directors of FIA are members of the team.
The JIT has been formed under the directions of the interior ministry and has been tasked to finalise the inquiry
Sources said FIA team has started contacting different political personalities to record their statements. The FIA will get statements of all politicians and former military officials allegedly involved in money distribution scam irrespective of their present assignment. Air Marshal (r) Asghar Khan, had alleged that country’ premier intelligence agency, ISI, distributed Rs140 million among politicians in the 1990 elections to form the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) government and prevent PPP’s Benazir Bhutto from winning the polls.
A senior officer of FIA wishing not to be named confirmed that the agency had been tasked to speed up the inquiry and to finalise it within the shortest possible time. He said that new investigation team had been asked to see the mandate given by the Supreme Court.
Former banker Younis Habib recorded his statement to the FIA team in which he denied his pervious statements.
