Over 1800 clerics from different schools of thoughts in Pakistan issued a Fatwa (Islamic ruling) declaring suicide attacks to be Haram (forbidden). Details of the Fatwa signed by 1829 clerics emerged on Monday. The ruling states that those who commit suicide attacks, those who order such attacks, those who train such people are all considered rebels against the true spirit of Islam.
It outlined clearly that the act of waging war and bloodshed in the name of Jihad can only be initiated by the State. Those who impose their viewpoints on by force are responsible for spreading mischief on earth (Fasad fil Arz). The document, signed by the clerics from all schools of thought, was presented under the title Peghaam-e-Pakistan at a ceremony held at the President house on Tuesday.
The unanimous Fatwa issued by religious scholars representing different schools of thought would help in addressing the challenges of sectarianism, extremism, and terrorism. It is a step in the right direction and it would go a long way in projecting soft and positive image of Pakistan in the comity of nations. Fatwa represents true teachings of Islam as it is a religion of peace, brotherhood, tolerance and accommodation. Unanimous narrative by the scholars against terrorism is evidence that the nation is committed to root out the scourge of terrorism and extremism from the country. Due to efforts of law enforcement agencies and successful army operations, Pakistan has achieved great successes in its fight against terrorism. Security situation in the country has improved manifold. Our valiant armed forces, administration and people rendered unrivaled sacrifices in dismantling the scourge of terrorism. Country is determined in its resolve to completely root out terrorism from its land. Along with military operations, many other vital elements of society including media and clerics can play pivotal role in reducing extremism. Fighting extremism and terrorism is shared responsibility of all Pakistanis. In Pakistani society clerics hold influence; common people contact them to seek guidance in dealing with religious and social issues. In such a scenario, issuance of a unanimous fatwa that termed suicide attacks forbidden in Islam would help in achieving peaceful, secure and progressive Pakistan.
