Imran Khan, Asad Umar, and Fawad Chaudhry, the leaders of the PTI, will be charged in the contempt case after November 10, according to a statement made on Wednesday by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The contempt case against Khan and other PTI leaders was heard by a four-member bench, which was presided over by Nisar Durrani. On behalf of the PTI, attorney Anwar Mansoor made an appearance. Advocate Mansoor contended during the hearing that the notices were not issued by the electoral watchdog but rather by the secretary of the ECP.
“Until this problem is resolved, the show-cause notice is invalid. The director general of law has signed the show-cause notice. The commission member claimed that the notices were issued by the ECP and not the secretary. He only informed, he continued.
As the Lahore High Court was considering a related case, the attorney for the PTI sought to release its charge sheet after October 31. Umar has received threats, he said, and he is not being protected. At this point, the member of the ECP stated that they would be forced to publish the charge sheet after November 10.
Khan, Chaudhry, and Umar received notifications from the ECP on August 19 for making “contemptuous” comments about the electoral body. The ex-premier was charged by the ECP with making “baseless claims” against it in its notices. The commission member claimed that the notices were issued.
