Efforts afoot to hold talks b/w Afghan govt, Taliban: FO

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday said that efforts are on for the holding of direct talks between Afghan government and Taliban to achieve the objective of peace and stability in the region.

At his weekly news briefing in Islamabad, Foreign Office Spokesperson Nafees Zakaria pointed out that the Quadrilateral Coordination Group involving Pakistan, Afghanistan, China and the United States are making efforts in their domain to bring the two sides to the table of negotiations.

Asked about allegations levelled by former Afghan President Hamid Karzai against Pakistan, he said Pakistan has special affection for the fraternal Afghan people.

He said it believes in an Afghan-owned and Afghan-led peace process which is indispensable for peace and stability in the region.

Responding to a question, the spokesperson said Kashmir is a longstanding item on the agenda of the United Nations (UN). There are several UNSC resolutions on the issue which accept the right of self-determination of the Kashmir people under the auspices of the United Nations.

He said several Indian writers and intellectuals have also expressed similar views about the disputed nature of Jammu and Kashmir territory and the blatant human rights violations by the Indian troops in Occupied Kashmir.

To a question the spokesperson strongly rejected as rumour mongering about the presence of Chinese People’s Liberation Army troops in Azad Kashmir.

Answering a question, Nafees Zakaria said Pakistan is the biggest victim of terrorism and there is national consensus to root out this menace without any distinction. NNI
