By Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has reiterated the call for galvanizing of the global efforts to save the future generations from the worsening climatic- induced consequences that led to flood-devastation in Pakistan. In an interview, the prime minister stated that he came to the United Nations to inform the world that "this tragedy could fall on another country tomorrow." The prime minister urged world leaders gathered for the General Assembly's annual meeting to unite and raise resources "to build resilient infrastructure, to build adaptation, so that our future generations are saved." He said the initial estimate of losses to Pakistan’s economy as a result of the three-month flooding disaster was $30 billion, adding that he had requested UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to urgently hold a donors’ conference. PM further said that the impact of climatic change on Pakistan was immense. Over 1,600 people were killed, including hundreds of children. Crops on 4 million acres have been destroyed. Millions of homes have been damaged or destroyed, and life savings have been lost in the devastating floods caused by monsoon rains, the prime minister was quoted as saying by media. "Thousands of kilometres of road have been smashed and washed away railway bridges, railway track, communications, underpasses, and transportation." "All of this requires funds," the prime minister said, emphasising the importance of funds in providing a living for their people. According to him, Pakistan is responsible for less than 1% of the carbon emissions that contribute to global warming. "We are victims of circumstances over which we have no control," he added.

FM Bilawal requests int'l assistance for flood victims' rehabilitation

NEW YORK: The Pakistan government took “swift and effective” action to deal with the unprecedented floods that have caused ’colossal’ destruction, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said Friday, as he called for generous international support during the next phases of rehabilitation and reconstruction. He called for "climate justice" for Pakistan as he wrapped up his engagements at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, as this disaster was clearly caused by climate change and global warming. "This is a monumental tragedy," the foreign minister told journalists at the UN Headquarters in New York. This summer's extreme heat melted many of Pakistan's glaciers, resulting in early flood outbreaks, and the heat-intensified precipitation resulted in above-average rains. Pakistan, he said, estimated total flood damage at more than $30 billion, or 10% of its GDP, with one-third of the country under water. Hundreds of people were killed, and thousands were injured.

A worrying moment for the European economy

The blame game continues amid the national calamity

By Sardar Khan Niazi

Nations stand united when calamities happen, but what our political leadership is doing? The worst floods have not been able to force political opponents to put aside their parochial differences and give a harmonized response to the disaster. Fulfillment of this desire remains a dream. With the exception of a few days after the deadly rainstorm started to cause unheard-of devastation across the country, depressing politics play continued as usual. A coordinated response is necessary to address the humanitarian crisis the country is currently experiencing in the face of a formidable economic challenge and skyrocketing inflation. In order to handle an enormous calamity, political leaders must group together; however, this is not visible. ‎ The extensive flooding brought on by the abnormal monsoon rains has caused massive displacement and loss. Climate change is responsible for 80 percent of the nation’s natural disasters and catastrophes over the previous 20 years. However, the poorly planned or unlawful river and canal bank constructions made it worse. ‎ The tragedy affected over 100 districts, with 80 districts designated calamity-stricken. Crops have suffered significant damage in addition to extensive residential and infrastructure demolition. Heartbreaking pictures show people struggling to survive in a sea of agony. Five hundred thousand people are living in camps. The estimate for the economic costs of the disaster is $31 billion so far. This tragic state of circumstances did little to persuade certain political figures to end their confrontational tactics and provocative language, at least temporarily. For instance, despite the mayhem around the nation, the political leaders continued their game of blaming each other. As the coalition government launched its relief efforts, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif extended an olive branch to Imran Khan and offered to work with the opposition during a national emergency. However, the PTI-run provincial governments in Punjab and KP did not make many efforts to engage with the center. ‎ The Prime Minister and the heads of the services gathered at a high-level conference last week to assess the situation and develop comprehensive relief and recovery strategies. The PTI chief ministers of Punjab and KP, who had been invited along with other CMs, both boycotted it. The chief secretaries of these two provinces were there, but the political overlords abstained. Amid a national emergency, the political leaders’ alienated response is a lackluster display. ‎The admirable response from the general public and local communities is the ray of sunshine in this desolate terrain. Local residents who risked their lives to save others are outstanding examples of bravery and heroism. In addition, municipal officials, both men, and women made round-the-clock assistance and evacuation efforts. The suffering people’s ability to endure also stands out as evidence of their self-respect and resiliency. NGOs and private charities all rose to the occasion and mobilized volunteers to help the flood victims. Media coverage pointed out the areas that required immediate help. To support the flood victims, civil society, businesses, the media, and residents across the country launched campaigns. A show of unity among political figures and parties is not matching the public’s role. There is still a scarcity of this because politicians are busy with their disputes. Can the country’s political elite also show the cooperation and resolve needed in the coming months to guide the ship of state through these rough waters to safer shores? Currently, Pakistan is passing through an extremely difficult period at every level and more so after the floods of unprecedented proportions. Unfortunately, the leadership is not focusing on policies for the rehabilitation and care of those millions that have lost everything. If politicians do not get serious, the scenario can worsen further.

Imran Khan demonstrates condition for returning to NA

By Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has set a condition to return to the National Assembly. Imran Khan stated that if the American cypher is investigated, he will return to the assembly. "We had good relations with the establishment; I'm not sure when or how they deteriorated," he explained. According to the former prime minister, the government requires a relationship with the establishment more than the opposition. We are in opposition; how we can have relations with the establishment while in opposition, he wondered. He claimed that the establishment exists in Pakistan and wields all power. The PTI chief went on to say that while he wants relations with everyone in the region for the sake of national security, there can be no foreign policy based on India's supremacy and recognition of Israel. He claimed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to destabilise Pakistan. Imran Khan has also stated that he wants relations with the United States and everyone else in the region to be based on national interests. Imran stated that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's speech at the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly is an announcement of the country's bankruptcy because both Shehbaz Sharif and Miftah Ismail have sunk the country's ship of state. He observed that the current government has pushed the economy to the point where surgery is required rather than medicine. According to Federal Finance Minister Miftah Ismail, the ruling elite's priorities are not the economy, but rather the abolition of corruption cases. "The incumbent government has closed NAB cases totaling 1100 billion rupees." Imran Khan went on to say that Ishaq Dar is ready to return home as soon as the NAB case is resolved, and that Nawaz Sharif is also getting ready to return.

Simple to talk about revolution, but difficult to put it into practice: Arif Alvi

By Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD: President Dr. Arif Alvi has stated that while discussing revolution is simple, actually putting it into practice is difficult. This was mentioned by Dr. Arif Alvi during his Saturday meeting with the social media influencers present. He described social media as having enormous potential and asserted that a party that understands how to use it effectively may lead the nation toward prosperity and development. "We resolved the problem of foreign Pakistanis' voting rights, which had been in the news since 2008. He continued that over Rs 36 billion in remittances are sent home by Pakistanis living abroad. Stealing has always been a big issue, but if Rs 36 billion could be moved electronically, why couldn't electronic voting? He questioned. In a conversation with former prime minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif in 2017, the president stated, "He said the Senate's votes are sold out, while we are standing still in the same earlier position." "In Sindh, power is the main area of worry. "I have seen violations of rights in Karachi since I was a young child," he claimed, adding that Imran Khan had made desperate attempts to clean up corruption in the city because no one else could. He continued by saying that Imran Khan could not be held accountable for all the actions of his 17.5 million supporters. The threat of theft has always been significant. We were beaten in the Bilawal House suburbs, "stated Dr. Arif Alvi. We made enormous efforts to address Karachi's problems with water, electricity, and sewage.

Mushaal lauds OIC's support for Kashmir cause, calls for concrete steps

By Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD: Mushaal Hussein Mullick, Chairperson Peace and Culture Organisation, eulogized OIC Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir for its support for the legitimate struggle of Kashmiris, urging world leaders participating in the UNGA to play their due role in solving Kashmir conflict to avoid a nuclear war in the region. Mushaal, the wife of imprisoned senior hurriyat leader Yasin Malik, said in a statement on Saturday that the OIC Contact Group reiterated their position that a final settlement of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and a UN-supervised plebiscite was essential for long-term peace and stability in South Asia. The chairperson praised the group for also condemning India's illegal and unilateral actions, as well as the sham trial and conviction of Yasin Malik on fabricated charges. However, the hurriyat leader urged the OIC to go beyond rhetoric and take practical and tangible steps to pressure the Indian government to resolve the decades-old dispute, fearing that it could lead to a nuclear conflict. Mushaal lamented that India was always trying to mislead the world in UNGA from grave human rights violations and continued genocide of people of the valley. As a result, she urged the OIC and the leaders and representatives of the countries represented at the current UNGA to take up the case of Kashmiris vociferously, as the fascist Indian government was attempting to change the demographic situation of the occupied valley. Mushaal maintained that the time had come to force the supremacist Indian government to resolve the Kashmir conflict in accordance with the UN Security Council-agreed formula and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. She feared that if the major world powers did not fulfill their responsibilities on the Kashmir issue in time, then Kashmir dispute could lead to a major nuclear conflict because it was not an internal matter of India, but a nuclear flashpoint in South Asia and a matter of political future of the 22 million Kashmiris. Mushaal claimed that the fascist Narendra Modi government unleashed a wave of barbarism and state terrorism in order to silence Kashmir's dissenting voices, but that all such brutal and inhuman tactics failed. The Chairperson urged the world to be aware of the grave situation in the valley in order to avoid the world's worst human tragedy, as brutal Indian forces failed to silence dissenting voices and have now resorted to genocide against Kashmiris to silence them permanently.

PM AJK denies statement wrongly attributed about PPP leadership

By Our Correspondent

MUZAFFARABAD: Prime Minister Azad Jammu and Kashmir Sardar Tanvir Ilyas Khan while denying the statement attributed to him about the top leadership of the People's Party on social media has said that the top leadership of the People's Party including Ms. Faryal Talpur and Chaudhry Riaz were respectable for him. In a statement issued today, the PM stated that spreading inappropriate statements about the PPP's top leadership on social media and spreading negative propaganda was nothing more than a reflection of the ill-will of those involved in this malicious campaign. The PM called the statement misleading and stated, "For us all, the political leadership of Pakistan is dignified, respectable, and we respect them all from the bottom of our hearts." It may be recalled that, in a statement circulated on Twitter yesterday, along with the picture of Azad Kashmir's Prime Minister, inappropriate comments were written about PPP leaders Ms. Faryal Talpur and Chaudhry Riaz, which had nothing to do with Prime Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas Khan's personality. Prime Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas Khan has a decade-long trusted relationship with Pakistan's top political leadership based on mutual respect and dignity, and those who attribute such fake and fabricated statements to him will ultimately regret it.
