ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) said on Friday that the preparations were complete for the first round of the local government elections that would take place tomorrow (Sunday) in the 14 districts of Sindh and Swat.
The Sindh High Court (SHC) dismissed the petitions brought by MQM-P and PTI against holding local bodies’ elections in Sindh without concluding the delimitation and election process and according to the Supreme Court’s orders, therefore voting will go as scheduled.
In their complaints, the parties claimed that the ECP had issued notices for the LG elections to be held in two phases on June 26 and July 26 without first following the correct electoral procedure.
They had argued that the contested notices violated a ruling by the Supreme Court that found several provisions of the local government act to be in violation of Section 140 A of the Constitution.
After hearing the arguments from the parties, the petitions were later dismissed by the division bench of the SHC, which was made up of Justices Mohammad Junaid Ghaffar and Amjad Ali Sahito.
