It was considered that after the combing operations in Karachi the security situation will improve, but recent incidents of target killings, assassinations, and sectarian violence are portraying an altogether opposite picture. In latest incidents of target killings, unidentified assailants in two different incidents killed Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Faiz Ali Shigri and Sheikh Sajid Mehmood. Sudden increase in target killing has raised concerns about the security situation in the port city which is also considered the financial hub of the country. It shows that despite the claims of government that peace has returned to the city, militants and terrorists still pose a threat to the residents in the country’s largest city. In such an environment question arises that what is being done to deal with this deteriorating situation? Law enforcement agencies are trying to eliminate terrorist outfits in the city but there seems no end to target killings. Some may argue that after Rangers operations security situation has improved in the city but it is also a harsh reality that target killings are not declining at all. Reportedly hundreds of people have become victim of such killing sprees and hardly any culprits were arrested. If we look at the incidents of target killings, the killers repeat almost the same pattern of committing crime, two or more men come on motorcycles who know where and when to target their victim and after completing the hits they vanish. There is dire need to comprehensively probe cases of target killings and unveil the network involved in target killings. Culprits must be arrested and handed down strict punishment to send a strong message that they will not be spared at any cost. Condolences and never ending process of inquiries would not do the job. It merely portrays the sorry state of affairs that after all the efforts of law enforcing agencies Karachi remains a dangerous and deadly place to live and work. A comprehensive National Action Plan has been formed to end menace of terrorism from country, but sadly many important points under this plan are yet to be implemented. It is need of time to implement NAP in true spirit and to take action against militants and their abettors. The complete implementation of NAP will go a long way in tackling the menace of terror in the country.
