Customs Intelligence seize smuggled cigarettes worth Rs 17 million

KARACHI: In its constant and ongoing campaign against smuggling of foreign origin goods causing heavy financial loss to national exchequer, Directorate of Customs Intelligence recovered huge quantity of foreign origin smuggled cigarettes of different brand in a successful operation.

According to details information was received that sizable quantity of foreign brands cigarettes are on move to find way in local markets. Acting on this a team of Customs Intelligence consisting was alerted to foil the attempt. As a result a Bedford Truck bearing Reg No. JT-0156 was halted near Denso Hall which was loaded with a container. On the spot inquiry showed huge quantity of cigarettes loaded in container. The same was escorted to the office of Customs Intelligence for further search. Detailed scrutiny of the container revealed that 299 Cartons having 23350 Bars/ Dandas of foreign origin smuggled cigarettes were present in the container. These included Pine Menthol, Super Slim ESSE, More Menthol and Mount Super Slim brand etc.

Total value of the contraband including the truck was determined as more than Rs. 1,70,00,000/- (One Crore Seventy Lacs).

On telephonic contact Muhammad Asif Marghoob Siddiqui, Director, Customs Intelligence informed that the recent seizure has been made in line with the anti-smuggling strategy of FBR and under the instructions of Director General Customs Intelligence Mr. Lutfullah Virk. He further told that during the last couple of months Customs Intelligence also seized foreign origin smuggled cigarettes valuing more than Rs. 8,00,00,000/- (eight crores).
