Mohammad Zubair, a journalist, was detained by security personnel on Monday. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), an independent monitoring group, has urged Indian authorities to free him “immediately and unconditionally” and to stop harassing him in reprisal for his reporting.
In a statement, Steven Butler, the coordinator of CPJ’s Asia program in Washington, D.C., said that the arrest of journalist Mohammad Zubair “marks another low for press freedom in India, where the government has created a hostile and unsafe environment for members of the press reporting on sectarian issues.”
Butler continued, “Authorities must immediately and unconditionally release Zubair and grant him the freedom to engage in his journalistic endeavors unhindered.”
On Monday, Zubair was taken into custody by Delhi police officers of the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations branch.
