LAHORE: Courts will protect the constitution at any cost this was stated by Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, Senior Puisne Judge, Supreme Court of Pakistan while addressing a ceremony in Lahore on Sunday. Justice Mian Saqib Nisar said that we have taken oath to protect the constitution. He said that running the daily affairs of the state is the responsibility of the elected representatives. He added that the higher courts can interpret laws, formulating laws is the duty of the legislature. Justice Mian Saqib Nisar said that our aim is to protect the fundamental rights of the people. He further added that law should treat the rich and poor equally and only then there will be rule of law. The senior judge said that courts should take notice in case there is violation of fundamental human rights. He also emphasized the need to deliver speedy justice.
Justice Mian Saqib Nisar was addressing the launch ceremony of senior lawyer SM Zafar’s book. Pakistan Peoples Party’s Senator Aitzaz Ahsan, senior lawyer SM Zafar, President Supreme Court Bar Association Pakistan (SCBAP) Barrister Syed Ali Zafar, Lahore High Court’s Justice Mamoon Rasheed Sheikh, Justice Shahid Waheed, Justice Ali Akbar Qureshi, Chairman Federal Services Tribunal Justice (retd) Syed Zahid Hussain, Dean Pakistan College of Law Prof. Humayun Ihsan, Vice Chancellor Punjab University Dr. Mujahid Kamran and a large number of lawyers.
Addressing the ceremony Senator Aitzaz Ahsan said that in the past there have been judges whose tenure is regarded as a blemish in our history. He however emphasized that faithfulness with the constitution and the continuation of constitution and law is vital for strengthening democracy in the country. The speakers were unanimous that only speedy provision of justice can establish rule of law in the country.
