Patriot Web Desk: The country is in desperate need of a counter narrative if we are to root out the menace of terrorism from our country, this was stated by Khursheed Nadeem while speaking in Roze News Program Analysis with Asif. He said that the society was united after the attack on the Army Public School in 2014 but in the aftermath of the recent attack on the Bacha Khan University in Charsadda, there has been visible disintegration in the society and there is an atmosphere of fear. He lamented that the unity of thought seen after the attack on the Army Public School has now vanished.
Khursheed pointed out that the institutions like National Counter Terrorism Authority Pakistan (NACTA) that were given responsibility in the war against terrorism also failed to deliver. He also pointed out the disintegration in the political leadership for the sake of their own interests that initially put on a united front in the form of the All Parties Conference (APC). He added that even the Ulema couldn’t transcend the limits of various sects and are still divided on the basis. Khursheed said that it is unfortunate that we have wasted he unity of thought that developed after the APS attack back in December 2014.
Khursheed pointed out serious flaws in the country’s strategy to fight the menace of terrorism and said that the National Action Plan (NAP) was formulated but no alternate narrative was presented. He said that the Armed Forces did their job by eliminating terrorist elements but the political leadership, Ulema and even the civil society that needed to present an alternate narrative to stop the growth ‘terrorist ideology’ failed. Responding to a question Khursheed said that the roots of the anti-state narrative that the terrorists follow are connected with religion and for precisely that reason there’s an added responsibility on Ulema to present a counter narrative. He added that it’s up to the Ulema to guide the nation about the positive use of religion and stop its negative use.
He added that media also has a role in the greater scheme of things, as the alternate or counter narrative can only be spread through the media.
