The recent cases of rape and murder in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkwa instead of jolting the ruling political parties in both provinces have started a round of allegations against each other. The round of allegations and self congratulatory antics started after the rape and murder of young Zainab in Kasur. After the issue surfaced that the young girl’s murder was not an isolated incident and as many as 12 such cases have been reported in the past 12 months, Punjab government came under fire. The criticism was justified as it is the government’s responsibility to protect its citizens. The Punjab government failed to fulfill its responsibility due to which the rapists roamed freely for months killing and raping young girls. The criticism on Punjab government was amplified as its role was questionable in hushing up the Hussain Khan Wala child sex scandal. The Punjab government however felt aggrieved at the criticism leveled against it by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and claimed that the party is politicizing the issue. The story culminated with Punjab Chief Minister conducting a press conference in which the arrest of Zainab’s murderer was announced and officers who played a part in the arrest were lauded. The self congratulatory and celebratory mood at the said press conference with Zainab’s father in presence was an unfortunate sight.
Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz despite showing its displeasure at the criticism against it in the Kasur tragedy by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Inasf however felt it necessary to take aim at Khyber Pakhtunkwa government after the news of rape and murder of four year old Asma in Mardan came to surface. When Asma’s murder was arrested recently, the Punjab government deemed it fit to claim credit for the arrest. The Punjab Law Minister commented on the arrest by saying that only way the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police were able to arrest the suspect involved in the murder of four-year-old Asma was through the DNA results provided by the Punjab Forensic Science Agency. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf was also in celebratory mood after the arrest of Asma’s killer with many party leaders lauding the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police for its exemplary performance.
The self congratulatory behavior and allegations against each other on such cases is unfortunate and condemnable. The least political parties can do is to avoid allegations on each other and self praise when it comes to such unfortunate incidents. By arresting the killers both government have done no favor to the citizens. In fact it is their responsibility and the crimes occurred in the first place due to the failure of these governments to protect their citizens.
