People offered special prayers throughout the night; special gatherings were also organized in mosques. Shab-e-Barat means the night of forgiveness or Day of Atonement. The night is considered as one of the Islamic Calendar’s holiest nights.
But is a rather unfortunate trend in the Pakistani media, specially the broadcast media that even the days of religious importance are used for the purpose of increasing revenue. Long transmissions are held on days of religious importance as well as for the entire month of Ramadan where commercialism is at its peak, ‘Islamic programs’ are telecasted however it is quite obvious that the sole aim of these ‘Islamic programs’ is to cash on the sentiments of people by using the name of Islam. Most of the religious shows are hosted by people who don’t have much knowledge of the religion, cash and other prizes are showered upon people who participate in such programs, however, the religious content is completely neglected.
