Civil society raised demand for Federal Right to Information legislation

RAWALPINDI: Immediate legislation on Right to Information (RTI) at Federal level demanded by Civil Society. According to details Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO) raised demand for immediate legislation for RTI at Federal level. Anusha Sherazi, Program Director of Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO) while sharing her concerns over Federal government delay on RTI legislation told that Right to Information (RTI) is a fundamental right of every citizen under Article 19-A of 18th amendment of constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan. She said the federal government should immediately introduce Right to Information legislation which is pending over many years. She said that the government needs to focus on the rights of the citizens under constitutional provisions. Anusha said Right to Information legislation in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was a land mark to ensure citizens’ participation in the governance issues of Pakistan. She was of the view that KP has the best implementation on Right to Information however Punjab has still weak mechanism to ensure timely provision of information to citizens’. Anusha urged media to use Right to Information as a tool for investigative reporting because it ensures the provision of attested information from public offices to nationals. She also urged the Punjab government to launch a campaign for awareness about Right to Information laws in Punjab.
