ISLAMABAD: A spokesman of the Chinese Embassy here said that China attended the Afghan Government-Taliban talks as a participant not observer, while fully supporting the reconciliation process.
Recalling China’s stance on the issue, he said China is a part of the peace process. Quoting a press statement issued in Beijing, he said his country fully supports the Government and Tehreek-e-Taliban Afghanistan talks held in Pakistan.
While commenting on the talks, spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry in Beijing said, “To facilitate the “Afghan-led and Afghan-owned” peace and reconciliation process, the representatives of China and USA also participated in the meeting. It was agreed that for lasting peace in the region, each side was fully committed to the process.
The participants exchanged views on ways and means to bring peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan, and recognized the need to develop confidence building measures to strengthen trust among all stakeholders. All parties agreed to continue talks.
The Chinese side always supports the “Afghan-led and Afghan-owned “reconciliation process. China encourages and supports the Government of Afghanistan to have peace talks with Tehreek-e-Taliban Afghanistan, and always maintains close contact with the concerned parties.
The Chinese side speaks positively of this meeting. China holds that this meeting is conducive to promoting peace and reconciliation process in Afghanistan. China appreciates the flexible attitude and collective willingness for convening this meeting to advance the peace and reconciliation process in Afghanistan.
China is ready to work with relevant parties and play a constructive role in achieving broad and inclusive peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan.”
