SHENZHEN: While the nation’s official observatory maintained its red alert for excessive heat on Saturday, several regions of China, including the significant southern city of Chongqing, baked in high temperatures 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).
The eastern province of Zhejiang, which is home to numerous industries and exporters, has smashed its old record for high heat days this year, having 31 days above 35C and 16 days above 38C, according to a meteorological official.
Hubei, Hunan, Shandong, Anhui, Xinjiang, Jiangxi, & Fujian were among the provinces and regions with temperatures above 35C, in addition to Chongqing, which on Saturday reached a high of 42.1C.
Although residents of the 25 million strong economic metropolis in Shanghai claim otherwise, a rainstorm may have prevented Shanghai from smashing its 40.9C record on Saturday.
