Frank Lampard may finally get the chance to unleash the attacking trio of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic against Southampton at the weekend. All three have the weight of huge price tags hanging over them, although Pulisic, being at the club last season, has started to repay that already. And with Lampard and Chelsea having spent so much money on attacking talent – we haven’t even mentioned Hakim Ziyech yet, who could make his debut following a training ground injury – there are always going to be comparisons with the forward line Premier League champions Liverpool have at their disposal. Chelsea’s has been supplemented with a smattering of German internationals, while Liverpool are a picture of consistency, starting yet another season with a triumvirate of Sadio Mané, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino. THE MOST IMPRESSIVE PART OF CHELSEA’S TRANSFER WINDOW On so many occasions last year, Liverpool’s front three were the difference in games where they may not have been at their best. The ability to claim all three points when playing badly is a old stereotype of champions, but Liverpool embodied it on a run which saw them go unbeaten for the first 27 games of the season.
Along the way to a first Premier League title and a first league triumph in 30 years, Liverpool scored 85 times, bettered only by Manchester City who topped 100. Chelsea on the other hand managed just 69, although that was enough to be third-most in the league. This year, with Havertz, Werner and a fully bedded in Pulisic to give opposition goalkeepers sleepless nights, theoretically, the Blues should score even more. Given the expenditure this summer, Chelsea will be expected to challenge for honours. The Premier League title may be just beyond their reach, but anything lower than third in the table by the time May 2021 comes around will be classed as a failure for Lampard.
