KARACHI: The police on Thursday submitted charge-sheet against newly elected Karachi mayor Akhtar and other accused in May 12, 2007 bloodletting incidents in the city.
Challan of four new cases has been granted for the accused including Karachi mayor involvement in May 12 Tragedy case.
Police have filed charge-sheet against Akhtar in attempt to murder, rioting, firing, arson attacks and ransacking property in the jurisdiction of Airport police station.
The cases have been transferred to anti-terrorism court II.
It should be mentioned here that as many as 20 accused including Waseem Akhtar and Aslam Kala are in custody of law-enforcers; while, 49 others including members of Sindh Assembly, i.e. Kamran Farooqi and Muhammed Adnan have not been arrested so far.
According to the challan, Waseem Akhtar confessed his involvement in May 12 tragedy. Challan also indicates that Aslam Kala was nailed on his identification.
Earlier also, challan in two cases against the mayor has been approved.
On May 12, 2007, on the occasion of the then deposed Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s visit to the city, clashes broke out among the armed workers of rival political parties in Karachi as more than fifty people were killed and scores of others were injured.
Opposition parties at that time blamed MQM, an ally of then military ruler General Musharraf, for the violence in the city.
