The Srinagar Highway protective u-turns in Islamabad are being redesigned, according to the Capital Development Authority (CDA). CDA Chairman Capt. (ret.) Muhammad Usman Younis observed the u-turns during his visit and gave the appropriate officials the order to acquire information on the number of vehicles using these u-turns.

In order to connect traffic from Islamabad to the highway system and Islamabad International Airport, he directed the department to create a plan for the building of elevated u-turns.

A High-Risk Area for Fatal Accidents

Following a survey that identified Srinagar Highway as a hotspot for fatal auto accidents, this development occurred right away. According to a survey from the sociology department at Quaid-e-Azam University, the number of traffic accidents has significantly increased in Islamabad. Old and poorly maintained vehicles, cell phone use, careless driving, poor road conditions, etc. are some of the prevalent causes.

According to the report, which used government data, 57% of accidents on the Srinagar Highway in 2021 resulted in fatalities while 43% did not. The ratio changed to 43% fatal and 57% non-fatal accidents in 2022, although the severity of the injuries was higher.

The ratio of fatal accidents would probably rise by the end of 2022, the research added. It also noted that 60% of the 118 high-speed crashes resulted in fatalities whereas 40% did not.The survey identified speeding and reckless driving as the leading contributors to collisions. However, it was determined that the authorities’ negligence is what causes irresponsible and over the limit driving.
