In order to discuss the choice of Pakistan’s next army chief, the federal cabinet is currently gathering under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, according to a report on Thursday. According to reports, the meeting is being attended by the interior minister Rana Sanaullah, law minister Malik Shahadat, health minister Abdul Qadir Patel, and defence minister Khawaja Asif. Sherry Rehman, Chaudhry Salik Hussain, Aminul Haque, Shahzain Bugti, Maulana Asad Mehmood, and Riaz Pirzada are federal ministers.
PM Shehbaz presided over a meeting of the coalition parties’ parliamentary leaders earlier today, and all participating parties declared their support for the PM’s choice of the army chief. The coalition partners last night, in a rare display of cooperation, expressed complete confidence in the prime minister and gave him permission to decide whether to finalise constitutional appointments to the Pakistan Army.
To discuss the appointments of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) and Chief of Army Staff, the coalition parties of the Shehbaz Sharif-led government met at Prime Minister House. The Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement that quoted coalition party leaders as saying, “We stand with you no matter what decision you make.”
