Berlin (DPA): Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have signed a sponsorship deal with the operators of Doha airport in Qatar as one of their 10 so-called platinum partners, Munich said Wednesday.
The five-times European champions Munich gave no details in a statement, saying only it has “concluded a long-term agreement” with Hamad International Airport Doha which opened in 2014.
Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said “this partnership is another step in our internationalisation strategy.
“Part of our cooperation agreement is that we will jointly support social projects and a dialogue concerning critical community and political topics.”
Munich have held winter training camps in Qatar in the past years, despite criticism from politicians and human rights organizations over Qatar’s rights record in areas such as migrant workers.
Qatar were controversially elected hosts of the 2022 World Cup. The awarding of the tournament by the executive committee of the ruling body FIFA is being investigated by Swiss authorities.
Rummenigge took part in a presentation of the deal in Doha along with Munich winger Franck Ribery, according to the Bild paper.
