KARACHI (INP): Government of Sindh has imposed ban on excavation of land, carrying out of mud, sand in the areas of Lyari on Tuesday.
Sindh Home Department said that provincial government in exercise of powers conferred under Section 144 (6) Cr.P.C. has imposed ban on excavation of land and carrying out mud, sand and even any other sort of natural resources within the territorial jurisdiction of Lyari Development Authority with immediate effects and till further orders.
Meanwhile, in wake of incident on Eid-ul Fitr at Karachi beach in which 38 people lost their lives, a meeting was held under the chair of Director General Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Commander (Retd) Syed Salman Shah to discuss the beach safety measure here at PDMA office.
Syed Salman Shah highlighted the importance and need for the beach safety measure in general and upcoming Eid-ul-Azha in particular and stressed upon short term and long term beach safety measures. The meeting discussed to devise early warning system for beach safety and establish a central control and sub control rooms.
It was also decided to enhance beach patrolling by all concerned department / authorities to avoid any untoward incident in future while number of lifeguards will also be increased. It was also discussed at length to deploy buoy and marking of areas safe for swimming and establishment of watch towers at beach.
The participatory role of NGO’s in creating awareness and advocacy through print and electronic media as well as billboards and appropriate indicators for the people visiting sea view were also discussed at length. In long term intervention it was discussed to conduct study at all beaches of Karachi and classify beaches according to their vulnerabilities. It was also stressed to do legislation for beach safety and implementation of world best practices used for beach safety.
