At least 69 people were killed in a suicide blast that took place in Lahore’s crowded Gulshan-i-Iqbal park on Sunday evening. Sunday was supposed to be a happy day for a lot of people due to Easter turned into one of the goriest ones in the history of the city.
It is massive death toll which is sadly expected to rise since more than three hundred others are believed to have been injured and some are in critical condition. It is APS like attack in a way that it was meant to target as many children as possible. Suicide bomber detonated himself near the entrance to a children’s playground.
We are in state of war against terror, but considering the mounting terrorist attacks it seems only military actions won’t be enough to tackle this monster of terror. We need an overhaul of the society. We need to eliminate growing extremism from society. After successful military operations there is sharp reduction in terrorist attacks but still terrorists are targeting soft targets across the country. We were told that Pakistan is a safe place now but it proved just a myth.
Its hard to say but National Action Plan has lost its sharpness, its failing. Earlier this year we have seen brutal APS like attack in Bacha Khan University in Charsadda. Implementation of NAP is a shared responsibility. Civilian government has failed to implement NAP in true letter and spirit. Martyrs of APS strengthened our resolve against terrorism; do we need martyrs every year to sense the matter of urgency? We are fighting a war; we need to set our priorities accordingly.
