After Sunday’s final game of a three-match series against New Zealand, Australia’s one-day cricket skipper Aaron Finch will stop playing in international games of the format, Cricket Australia announced on Saturday.
Finch, who has 145 one-day matches under his belt and 54 as Australia’s captain, will continue to skipper the nation’s T20 team, including at this year’s World Cup, which Australia will host starting on October 16.
It has been a fantastic ride with some wonderful memories, Finch said in a statement.”I have been blessed by all the guys I have played with and the many people behind the scenes, and I have been really lucky to be a part of some outstanding one-day sides.
“I thank all of those who have aided and supported my path to this point. It is time now to offer a new leader the best opportunity to prepare for and win the next World Cup.”Finch, 35, announced his retirement at a time when his one-day batting performance was at an all-time low.
He failed to register a run for the fifth time in 13 one-day innings this year when Australia defeated New Zealand by 113 runs on Thursday.Despite not scoring any runs, Finch took three catches and captained the home team admirably as they successfully held on to a total of 196.
