KARACHI: After enduring a fatal and disastrous time of downpour during Eidul Azha, Karachi is preparing for another phase of intense monsoon showers and potential flooding, as per a Met Office forecast.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, “another significant monsoon low-pressure region” is expected to enter Sindh on Thursday (July 14) and last through Monday (July 18).
The Met Office predicted that between July 14 and July 18, widespread rain-thunderstorms with a few heavy/very heavy falls are likely to occur in the following locations: Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Tharparkar, Tando Mohammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Sanghar, Nawabshah, Naushero Feroz, Khairpur, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Qam.The Met Office issued a warning that significant rainfall could result in floods and water logging in low-lying districts of Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Dadu, Jamshoro, Nawabshah, Jacobabad, Larkana, and Sukkur, as well as Karachi.
It added a warning that a “rates of chronic spell may cause hill torrent sites flood along and upstream Kirthar range.”
As a result, it urged all relevant agencies to exercise caution and vigilance and to take the appropriate action.
Separately, Sherry Rehman, a minister for climate change, tweeted an update on the rain “For the past 13 days, Sindh and Balochistan have been under intense monsoon pressure. Balochistan is 501% just above 30-year average, whereas Sindh is 625% above it.”
