LAHORE: The PPP candidate won the Punjab National Assembly seat, breaking a four-year seat drought during which the party had been unable to secure any seats in the state.
In the previous ten years, Punjab had only produced two NA seats for the PPP. Son of former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gillani and candidate Syed Ali Musa Gillani won the NA-157 Multan-IV by-election.
Meher Bano Qureshi, daughter of PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi, lost to him by over 93,000 votes in the constituency. Qureshi joined PTI in February 2012 after winning the NA-148 seat in 2008.
In the by-elections, Musa received the PPP’s nomination and won by defeating PML-Abdul N’s Ghaffar Dogar.Since then, the PPP has consistently performed poorly in both the by-elections and the general elections in Punjab.
After the 2013 elections, Malik Ghulam Rabbani Khar was the only PPP ticket holder to succeed in winning the NA seat in by-elections.
