Afghan President, ISI chief discusses security issues

KABUL: The Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Chief  Lt Gen Rizwan Akhtar, Sunday called on Afghan President Ashraf Ghnai, in Kabul and discussed security issues, the Afghan Presidential Palace said.

“The President of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met the Pakistan intelligence ISI chief Lt General Rizwan Akhtar in his office on Sunday afternoo,” the Presidential Palace said in a statement.

“Both sides discussed ways to further strengthen joint efforts against terrorism and extremism,” it said.

They also discussed peace and security in Afghanistan, Pakistan and the region as well as several other regional matters.

Pakistani and Afghan security officials have increased contacts following the inauguration of President Ashraf Ghani in September.

Last month Army chief General Raheel Sharif and his Afghan counterpart General Sher Muhammad Karimi at the army’s headquarters in Rawalpindi had agreed that their commanders would begin meetings immediately to further coordinate cross border security operations. NNI
