KARACHI: An Afghan diplomat, identified as 3rd Secretary was fatally shot by a security guard in the Afghan Consulate in Karachi’s Old Clifton area on Monday.
The guard, Hayatullah, an Afghan national, opened fire on the third secretary, Abdul Zaki, in the lobby of the Afghan consulate after a personal disagreement arose between the two men, according to the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Azad Khan. He used a sub-machine gun.
Hayatullah, was taken into custody following the incident and the situation was brought under control after almost 30 to 45 minutes of firing inside the Consulate. The DIG said the incident did not appear to be an act of terrorism. Following the incident, police and Rangers had cordoned off the highly sensitive area which is home to a number of foreign missions.
“We are collecting evidence and will obtain CCTV footage in order to investigate the incident,” the DIG said, adding that the consulate had been cleared. INP
