While I have generally been enjoying my time with Cyberpunk 2077, despite all its technical issues on console, sometimes you run into something so absurd you have to stop and write an entire article about how stupid it is. And that is where we are today.
While I have been going full blades, full open combat rampager for my version of V, in the stealth tree there was a skill that interested me, the ability to throw knives.
Now, throwing knives are of course something you can get in many different video games, but here, this is a skill that can simultaneously waste 1-3 skill points, while also destroying valuable gear. Wow!
So what’s the deal?
Gaining the ability to throw knives through this skill means you are throwing melee knives. There is no special kind of throwing knife that I’ve found in the game yet.
Fine, but the catch is that after you throw a knife, you cannot pick up the knife again. Not embedded in a person you killed, not on the floor. It is gone, no matter the rarity. I have heard stories of people throwing blue and purple knives only to immediately lose them before they realized this was the case, even if they could literally see them on the ground in front of them. It’s unclear if this is a bug or intended, but this is how it works.
So in theory, I guess the idea is that you’re supposed to either just buy knives for a few hundred eddies a pop or craft them to use for this and stack them in your inventory. All of which is stupid and wasteful.
In the end, this skill can waste not just one skill point, but at least three with another perk that upgrades thrown knife damage twice, plus it can make you lose rare, epic or legendary knives that you may not realize you would destroy if you threw them.
This is, without exaggeration, one of the dumbest skill perks I have ever seen in a video game. Games have been giving us throwing knives for how long now?
And this is how it works in Cyberpunk? You have to be kidding me. I understand the game has bigger problems than this, and yet losing a perk point in an actively harmful skill is going to cause a lot of regrets for people, not to mention losing whatever knife you happen to throw before you figure this out. Hence this warning.
Don’t get me wrong, holding onto knives and slashing enemies with them is one of the most OP things in the game, in addition to all the other blades, which I have fully specced into. But this skill? Hilariously bad and terrible in a way I frankly have never seen before.
Update: At the suggestion of a lot of people, I will warn you about another harmful perk too.
This is the one the tech crafting tree which auto-dismantles junk. Early on in the game when money is scarce, this can cost you a lot of cash, and sometimes you get junk items that are meant to be sold for a lot of money, and it scraps those too. Maybe later in the game when money is more prevalent and you need more crafting materials you can get this, but do not get it early.
