The US has begun work on a new proposal for a 60-day ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel to implement UN Resolution 1701.
Global news agency Reuters has confirmed with two sources that efforts are being made to reach a ceasefire, but it remains difficult to implement.
The two-month ceasefire period will be used to finalize the full implementation of the largely unenforced UN Security Council Resolution 1701, one of the sources told Reuters.
It should be noted that this resolution was passed in 2006 to keep southern Lebanon free of weapons and independent, and this resolution led to talks between Israel and Hezbollah last year to end the fighting.
The two sources told Reuters that the 60-day ceasefire proposal is now being considered by other countries besides the US.
A person briefed on the talks said Israel was still pushing for “direct enforcement” of the ceasefire through airstrikes or other military operations against Hezbollah. If Hezbollah violates the agreement.
