LONDON: Commenting on ongoing corruption cases against Sharif family, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz on Sunday said the whole world knows ‘this is revenge’.

Speaking to journalists before leaving for Pakistan from London’s Heathrow Airport, Maryam said Sharif family will test the judicial system by appearing before courts despite all the reservations. She said that they respect the rule of law and Constitution and as responsible citizens will appear before the court.

To a question regarding Nawaz Sharif’s re-election as PML-N’s president, she stressed it is party’s democratic right and no one should object to it. She said the things going on in Pakistan for more than one and a half year are in front of everyone now and the government will complete its tenure despite all the hurdles.

To another question, Maryam said her brothers Hassan and Hussain will appear before the courts but it is up to them to decide about their return to Pakistan.

Maryam Nawaz and Captain (retd) Safdar are likely to appear before an accountability court Monday (October 09).  The couple is expected to reach Benazir Bhutto International Airport (BBIAP) here via Qatar Airways flight after ending their three-week long stay in London.

Maryam and Safdar have been subpoenaed time and again by the accountability court in a graft reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in compliance with Supreme Court orders.

On October 2, the court issued ‘non-bailable arrest warrants’ for ex-PM’s three children – Maryam, Hussain, and Hassan Nawaz – and son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar over their perpetual absence during the court proceedings.

They had also been directed to submit surety bonds worth Rs1 million each.

After supervising a successful NA-120 by-election campaign for her mother and PML-N candidate Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, Maryam with her spouse had departed forLondon on Sept 18 – just a day after PML-N won back NA-120 seat – to see her ailing mother.

Maryam, Hussain, Hasan and Capt (r) Safdar have been summoned for the next hearing on October 9, the day when Sharif is also expected to be indicted.

The Supreme Court deposed Sharif in July following an investigation into corruption allegations against him and his family, making him the 15th prime minister in Pakistan’s 70-year history to be ousted before completing a full term.

The allegations were sparked by the Panama Papers leak last year, launching a media frenzy over the lavish lifestyles and high-end London property portfolio of the Sharif dynasty. NNI
