Shahnawaz Amir, the main suspect in his wife Sarah Inam’s murder, was placed in judicial detention for 14 days on Thursday by an Islamabad district and sessions court. After serving his physical remand, Shahnawaz—who is also the son of senior journalist Ayaz Amir—was brought before civil judge Aamir Aziz. The police then asked for the court to remand the main suspect.

Shahnawaz was detained by the court for 14 days after the court granted the police’s request.Shahnawaz’s physical detention was prolonged for three days at the last hearing after the investigating officer informed the court that the deceased’s passport needed to be re-covered because it could provide important new information about her travel habits.

Sarah Inam was murdered in Shahnawaz’s home, according to the plaintiff’s attorney, who also warned the court that the suspect would flee if the victim’s passport is not found within 14 days of the murder.

The situation

On September 23, after a fight over a family matter, senior writer Ayaz Amir’s son Shahnawaz is accused of killing his wife Sarah in their house. When Shahnawaz was arrested by police from a farmhouse in Islamabad’s Chak Shahzad neighbourhood, he confessed to the crime and said he “thought” his wife was having an affair with someone else.

Only 3 months of their wedding were lived together. The following day, a trial judge approved the warrants issued for Ayaz Amir and his ex-wife Sameena Shah after getting a suspect nomination from Sarah’s family. Ayaz Amir’s case was dropped because there was “no proof” connecting him to the murder, but the court gave Sameena a temporary pre-arrest order and told her to help with the investigation.
