In a possible case of kidnapping and rape, two Indian sisters were discovered hanging from a tree in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The remains were discovered, according to the police, on Wednesday in the Lakhimpur district.
The family claimed the girls had been abducted and raped, so they opened an investigation. On rape and murder charges, six men have been detained. According to authorities, the post-mortem examination of the bodies has been sent. The girls, who were both under 18, were from the Dalit caste, which was at the bottom of a very restrictive Hindu social structure.
A 2020 case involving the gang rape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit lady in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras area generated a public outcry and highlighted how vulnerable Dalit women were, despite constitutional protections, the community still frequently experiences prejudice and violence.
Locals and opposition parties have protested in response to this issue as well. The girl’s mother reportedly told the media that the two had been abducted by motorcycle-riding guys. She claims that when she attempted to stop them, she was attacked.
The girls were later discovered hanging from a tree, according to the family, who had started looking for them. When the police arrived at the girls’ home, where locals had joined the family in protest, they reportedly encountered some resistance.
