NEW DELHI: Congress leaders led by Priyanka Gandhi was detained here on Friday as they marked the “death of democracy” in India on August 5.

The Congress remained low about the cession of contested Jammu and Kashmir on this day in 2019, which it opposed, and the later stone-laying ceremony for the proposed tomb at the site of the razed Babri Masjid, to which it offered a mixed response, instead focusing on inflation, unfair trade taxes, and authoritarian metrics used to crush the protests.

Anyone who highlighted people’s grievances or spoke out against the “onset of dictatorship” was mercilessly attacked and imprisoned, according to Rahul Gandhi.

The issue also forced the postponement of both parliamentary chambers as Congress members protested. To protest inflation and unemployment, Congress leaders marched to the streets, engaging in spectacular stand-offs with police outside the Parliament complex and all India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters.

Police detained top politicians including Mr Gandhi, Rajya Sabha Leader Mallikarjun Kharge, Lok Sabha Leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, and general secretaries K.C. Venugopal and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Ms Vadra went over a wall and sat in protest outside the AICC headquarters, creating a dramatic scene.
