6.7 million drug users in Pakistan: Balighur

ISLAMABAD (INP): Minister of State for Interior, Balighur Rehman Tuesday said the government is taking different steps to address the increasing trend of use of narcotics in youth in the country.

Responding to a call attention notice of Ms. Rida Khan and others, the Minister of State said according to a survey of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, there are 6.7 million identified drug users in the country. He said the UN has declared Pakistan poppy free cultivation country and Pakistan is maintaining this status.

He said our neighbor country Afghanistan is number one in the poppy cultivation and due to porous border forty percent of drugs being smuggled from that country passing through Pakistan.

Balighur Rehman said that with the cooperation of the provincial governments’ efforts are being made to include character building subject in the syllabus which would discourage use of drugs in the youth.

The house offered Fateha for those lost their lives in a blast in Bajour Agency Tuesday.
