ISLAMABAD: At least 4000 trees have been cut down within a period of one year in the wake of development projects in Islamabad.

Islamabad ‘The Green’ is a dream now as the genocide of trees in the name of infrastructure is on the rise. Roads in the capital are widening as green belts are shrinking and trees are being chopped up.

After the Metro Bus project, Express way expansion project has resulted into felling a huge number of trees. In addition to the damage caused during the construction of the Metro Bus project, when an estimated 3000 trees were cut down around 600 trees have now been uprooted till date from Zero-point to Faizabad to expand the Express way.

On the other hand, Federal Minister for Climate Change Senator Mushahidullah Khan has said that more trees will be planted in comparison to those which are cut down. However; during the Metro Bus project new plants replaced the old trees but the authorities have no answer to the question that how can these new plants compensate for trees planted before.
