195 criminals killed during police encounters: IGP Sindh

KARACHI (NNI): Considerable/substantial reduction in crime has been witnessed in the province of Sindh in this year especially in July and August.

The Sindh Police has focused against terrorism, target killings, kidnapping for ransom and extortion. Since 1.7.2014, 195 criminals have been killed in 5174 encounters, while 1238 have been arrested.

This was informed to IGP Sindh Ghulam Hyder Jamali during a review meeting regarding Law & Order Situation here today in Central Police Office. AIG Operations, Ghulam Azfar Mahesar while comparing the number of killings in August 2013 with August 2014 said that the figure has come down from over 275 to around 150 which show considerable reduction. “Similarly in July 2013, 246 were killed while in July 2014 148 persons lost their lives (275-150=125 & 246-148=98)”, he added.

AIG,Ops maintained that recently the incidents of killings have further declined and the average death toll has been brought down from 9 to 5 per day (Approx). He disclosed that presently the number of outstanding kidnappees in Karachi is 6 which is the lowest in past six months. Only a couple of month back as many as 23 persons were outstanding which was 300% per cent higher as compared to the present figure.

“A successful operation was conducted at Kashmore where Mansoor Soomro was recovered,who was kidnapped from Clifton, Karachi. Similarly, over 40 kidnappees were outstanding in Rest of Sindh only two months ago and now figure has come down to 7”, he revealed.

He further informed that during the last 2 months, street crime has also been targeted by Police and as a result 152 criminals involved in dacoities and robberies have been killed while 1164 have been arrested in 314 encounters. “Police killings continue to pose serious challenge. During 2014, 117 in Karachi while 35 Police officials have been martyred in Rest of Sindh. 36 accused have arrested and 18 killed”, he added.
