ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly was informed Wednesday that about 17862 children became victim of abuse in the country during the last five years.
Replying to a question by Shahida Rehmani, Minister for Human Rights Mumtaz Ahmad Tarar said of these 10620 were girl and 7242 boys.
He said in the wake of 18th constitutional amendment, the subject of minors/children has been transferred to the provinces. Accordingly the provincial home departments were requested to furnish the requisite information but their response is still awaited. However he said the figures are based on data compiled by Sahil, a partner organisation of the Ministry working on child rights and protection
Tarar said 13267 cases were registered with the police regarding child abuse. He said only 112 persons were sentenced in these cases of child abuse.
Giving details, the Minister said 25 persons were given death sentence while others were awarded imprisonment for different durations. INP
