11 dead, scores trapped after Lahore factory collapse

LAHORE: At least ten people have died while hundreds
more are feared trapped after a three-storey shopping bag making
factory located in Sunder Industrial Estate came down crashing on
around 300 people working inside.

“The building collapsed after the roof of its 2nd floor, where
expansion work was underway, caved in. So far rescuers have dug out at
least 11 bodies, but the death toll is feared to rise sharply,” DCO
Lahore Capt (Retd) Usman said.

At least 15 injured survivors had been pulled out from under the piles
of rubble, a rescue official said adding they were using all kinds of
resources to save as many lives as they could.

“Heavy machinery  is being used to dig through the debris. We will
leave no brick unturned in the search for survivors,” the rescue chief

According to sources, the owner was also in the factory along with
hundreds of others when it crumbled; however there was no way to
confirm the exact number of the people still trapped in the toppled

“Some eyewitnesses claimed that  more than 400 persons might be
trapped under the debris,” the sources added.

As many as 30 ambulances of Rescue 1122 , 15 Fire emergency vehicles,
heavy cranes and other machinery were busy in the rescue operation.

“The district administration has put Jinnah Hospital,  Sharif Medical
City Hospital and Lahore General Hospital on red alert keeping in view
the expected emergency,” a government official said. NNI
