Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned Indian deputy High Commissioner JP Singh for the fourth time in this week on Saturday to lodge protest with over ceasefire violations by Indian forces along the Line of Control (LoC).
In the past one week Indian forces violated LoC numbers of times and killed civilians. On 20th January 2018 in Khuiratta, Bagsar and Khanjar Sectors, Indian firing resulted in the killing of one 60 years old innocent civilian, Ghulam Ali, while injuring two girls (6 years old chaman bibi and 27 years old Maria). The Indian diplomat was also summoned over Indian firing across the Working Boundary in Sialkot, Punjab. In Friday’s meeting, Foreign Office’s South Asia Director General Dr Faisal handed over a protest letter to the Indian deputy high commissioner. On January 18, two women were martyred and five people injured as a result of unprovoked Indian firing across the Working Boundary in Sialkot. The FO said that despite calls for restraint, India continues to indulge in ceasefire violations. India frequently opens unprovoked fire across the LoC, resulting in the martyrdom of civilians and army officials. One other soldier was injured in the unprovoked firing. According to the Foreign Office, India committed 70 ceasefire violations in the first 12 days of the year and 1,900 in 2017.
It is evident that relations between two rival countries have touched perhaps lowest point in recent times, but constant ceasefire violations on LoC and Working Boundary not only killing civilians but also becoming reason of further escalation of tension. The tension is now heading towards a critical point, India should realize the risk involved in its dangerous endeavors. India should also realize that its aggressive approach would lead the region towards anarchy and chaos.
Despite heightened security protocol and all other measures, there seems no end to these border skirmishes. Continued border skirmishes can’t be termed as full-scale war but it can lead both countries to a bigger tragedy. In order to maintain peace along the Working Boundary, Indian military must stop targeting innocent civilians of villages living along the bordering areas.
Our government should make every effort to highlight Indian acts of aggression at international forums. The international community should also take note of the continuous and dangerous Indian aggression that can lead to instability in the entire South Asian region and maybe even beyond.
