Probing allegations of horse trading

March 8, 2018

Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced on Tuesday to probe allegations of horse trading by certain political organisations after Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) won majority in Senate elections held on March 3. According to a notification issued Tuesday, the commission has directed party heads and parliamentarians to file details of horse trading by March 14. The authorities have asserted that legal action would be pursued against those who were part of alleged horse trading in Senate elections 2018.
More or less all the political parties were putting allegations against each other for alleged horse trading and buying of votes in the Senate polls. PMLN, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf and Mutahhida Qaumi Movement and Pakistan People’s Party all claimed that due to horse trading they got fewer seats in Senate if compared with number of their members in the provincial assemblies.
Electronic and print media also raised the issue and condemned the horse trading in the upper house of the Parliament. Editor in Chief Pakistan Group of Newspapers and Chairman Roze News also discussed in his talk shows the issue of alleged horse trading in Senate polls. In the talks shows it was urged, even before the elections, that relevant institutions must take note of allegations of horse trading and use of money in the polls. Daily Patriot and Daily Pakistan also published reports regarding allegations of horse trading leveled by various politicians.
Former Chief Justice of Pakistan and Chairman Pakistan Justice and Democratic Party (PJDP) Justice (retd) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Tuesday also said that his party has filed a complaint with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) with regards to claims of horse trading in the recently concluded Senate Election. The former Chief Justice of Pakistan said that he had presented the news clippings of Daily the Patriot to ECP along with his complaint demanding probe of the issue.
Horse trading is a serious issue, particularly when it comes to the Senate polls, because if a person manages entry into the upper house of parliament by corrupt practices; he would more likely not be looking after the interest of the public but his own. ECP has taken right decision to probe the allegations because for smooth functioning of democracy, immoral practices of horse trading and changing loyalties must be purged from political system.
ECP has rightly taken decision of probing allegations of horse trading in Senate polls.
