ISLAMABAD: The death anniversary of Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed (Nishan-e-Haider) was observed Tuesday. Tufail was born in Hoshiarpur, India, in 1914. While in 1943, he was commissioned in the 16th Punjab Regiment.In 1958, he was appointed as Company Commander of East Pakistan Rifles which a paramilitary force was created to guard the border region. On August 7, 1958, he launched an offensive against Indian forces that captured a village in the area of Lakshmipur. Despite facing heavy resistance from the invaders, Major Tufail and his men carried on with their mission and were able to force the enemy to withdraw their hold over the village. Major Tufail was received a number of bullets on his chest and received martyrdom the same day. He was awarded with Nishan-e-Haider , Pakistan s highest military award for his courage and was buried in Burewala. INP
