Israeli forces killed 17 Palestinians last week during a demonstration on its border with Gaza. The Palestinian authority revealed that Palestinian protesters were killed by Israeli forces as thousands marched near Gaza’s border with Israel in a major demonstration marking the 42nd anniversary of Land Day. Protesters were gathered to register protest against the Zionist occupation’s policy of confiscation, uprooting, and displacing Palestinian in 1976 that killed and wounded number of people as hundreds were detained by the Zionist occupation. The march was called for by all political factions and several Palestinian civil society organisations in the besieged enclave.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health more than 1,400 others were wounded after Israeli forces fired live ammunition at protesters and used tear gas to push them back from a heavily fortified fence. Protesters in Gaza gathered in five different spots along the border, originally positioned about 700 metres away from the fence. As per reports, Israel’s army deployed more than 100 snipers on the other side of the border with permission to fire.
Israeli army’s use of force is indeed a clear violation of international law as live gunfire on unarmed civilians constitutes a brutal violation of the international legal obligation to distinguish between civilians and combatants.
This was not one off incident of Israeli barbarism; Palestinians have been enduring such bloodshed for the last 70 years. But United Nations and world powers are muted to condemn and take stern actions against the continued atrocities by Israeli forces. United Nations Security Councils role is condemnable as it fails to take action against Israel. It is condemnable that Security Council has yet again failed to stop the massacre and to hold those responsible to account.
If international community and UN seriously hoping for peace in the region, sincere efforts must take place to liberate the Palestinian people from the world’s largest open-air prison. Palestinians are living as hostages, Israel has the control on their lives as it decides the amount of food, water, electricity and medical treatment Palestinian would get. World powers must act to stop the illegal military occupation of Israel and the grabbing of land. An independent investigation must take place in order to determine the responsible for the killings of innocent civilians.
World powers must act to stop illegal military occupation and brutality of Israel against innocent Palestinians.
