Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Tuesday warned all members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to transparently answer the questions he raised or he will take to the streets once again.
Criticising the reply he received from the body over a letter he had sent questioning its shortcomings in light of the Judicial Commission report, Khan said it was his right to pose questions not only as a Pakistani but also as the chairman of a major political party.
He said his letter was in fact extracted from the JC report in which the honourable judges found the ECP to have not conducted its job. He said in response to his letter, the ECP had sent him a reply saying “the commission is a constitutional body and only a higher authority can seek explanations from it.” Imran said he is the head of a party which has received thousands of votes and secures the right to ask questions.
Khan hinted that he does not want to hit the street again and would use the legal means to put the commission to task, but stubborn behaviour of ECP can force him to use the path of protests once again.
Being the Chairman of major political party, queries of Imran should be addressed. But at the same time Khan needs to use the legal ways to deal with the matters. Politics of agitation is not the way forward. Not the revolution but evolution is the key for bringing positive change in the society.
Imran’s basic demand was to verify the four constituencies; out of two cases Lahore High Court has given verdict in the favour of Imran. May be institutions are working with snails pace but they are working. On the other side, judicial commission formed to investigate planned rigging in general elections 2013 also pointed out number of lapses and shortcomings on the end of ECP. By using the way of legislation electoral process can be strengthened.
The PTI chief should use legal means to get answers from ECP and should refrain from politics of agitation.
