ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Chamber of Small Traders on Friday lauded the government for its keen interest in power generation which has resulted in the surplus production of electricity.
It also credited the government for its efforts to balance the energy mix of the country which remained tilted towards oil for decades.
Surplus power production is a good development but it should be continued on a sustainable basis for which the issue of timely payment to the independent power producers and circular debt should be resolved, said Patron Islamabad Chamber of Small Traders Shahid Rasheed Butt.
He said that country has witnessed worst electricity riots during the ability of the country to produce surplus power which was constrained by lack of resources.
A government has also lost general elections due to the issue of loadshedding in sizzling weather due to the same reason, therefore, the incumbent government should also pay attention to the shambled transmission and distribution system, he added.
Shahid Rasheed Butt said that the problems of billing and recovery, electricity theft to the tune of trillions of rupees and other matters also merits the attention of the government otherwise the establishment of new power plants may not help improve the situation.
He said that the real test of the government will start during the summer when the demand for electricity will increase. NNI
